Papua New Guinea
Andrew has just returned from a consultancy job in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The job included pregnancy diagnosing beef cattle for a training farm in Mount Hagaen in the Highlands. This has provided valuable input into a developing economy and has also been a great learning experience for Andrew.

NZ Vet Conference…
All of the staff attended the New Zealand veterinary conference.
Some examples of poisonings from the Waikato area were given.
PIG HUNTERS beware a dog collapsed after being exposed to tee tree nettle Ongaonga or Urtica ferox. It was a pig hunting dog. It was able to be treated, but this plant can kill animals and humans. Familiarise yourselves with it and avoid if possible. Wash the affected animal ASAP and get to a vet as soon as you can – run!
Another toxicity worth noting is the lethal dose of snail bait- Blitzem or Metarex- active ingredient is metaldehyde.
Cats will normally avoid but if a 20kg dog ingests 2g metaldehyde it needs to eat 130g Blitzem or 40g Metarex. A standard Blitzem pack is 500 g or 1 kg. Be careful this coming growing season.
